I am sitting in Klaus\u2019s office. It took almost an hour to pass through all the security checkpoints.
My water bottle was taken away, and my Swiss Army knife \u2014 which I always carry with me \u2014 was confiscated as well. Now I am sitting here, waiting. These controls only really began after 9\/11. Has the world become more dangerous since then?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus looks at me and says: \u201cMore dangerous? That\u2019s the wrong question. The world isn\u2019t more dangerous \u2014 it has become more fragile. Or at least people feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo feeling is enough,\u201d I reply. \u201cFacts no longer seem necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus leans back: \u201cFeelings decide elections. Feelings justify laws. Facts usually arrive too late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd feelings turn into rules,\u201d I say. \u201cRules that remain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus nods: \u201cBecause no one wants to be the one who removes security. Imagine something happens \u2014 and a measure could have been abolished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo we keep everything,\u201d I say. \u201cEven what costs freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus hesitates: \u201cFreedom is abstract. Security is concrete. It can be measured, controlled, administered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think of my knife. A tool. An everyday object. Now a risk. \u201cBefore,\u201d I say, \u201cthe decision was mine. Now it belongs to the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus answers calmly: \u201cSystems distrust individuals. They work better when behavior is predictable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut that\u2019s exactly the problem,\u201d I reply. \u201cPredictability replaces responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus raises an eyebrow: \u201cOr it prevents bad decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOr it treats people like children,\u201d I say. \u201cLike in school: rules instead of judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus is silent for a moment: \u201cPerhaps,\u201d he says, \u201cthat is the price of stability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I look around. Cameras. Access cards. Glass. Everything appears calm. Ordered. Safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cControl reassures,\u201d I say quietly. \u201cBut it narrows the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Klaus responds slowly: \u201cAnd the narrower the space becomes, the less room there is for responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
